What is Scaling

No, we’re not talking a building.
Or stepping on one.

It’s easy to step foot in a CrossFit Affiliate, see people performing movements or see a workout and think “I can’t do that.”
Chances are you’re right. You can’t and you shouldn’t... YET.

To scale, by definition means: with a uniform reduction or enlargement.

What we really want is to MODIFY. To modify is to make partial or minor changes to (something), typically so as to improve it or to make it less extreme.

Modification is an essential part of an athletes journey. Smart adjustments by a coach, I would argue, is the most important aspect of longevity in CrossFit. It is a necessity to both movement safety and development. It requires guidance from a skilled coach, as well as continuous self monitoring.

There are hundreds of movements in CrossFit, which means even more modification options.
The act of modifying is what allows every CrossFit workout to be completed by any person, no matter their age or current level of fitness. You can optimize a workout by reducing the weight, reps,  or complexity of movement. This helps keep the quality of  movement high, and ensures that a workout is performed with the right intensity.

We strive to make sure every athlete leaves the gym everyday feeling accomplished, a tad bit humbled, and having gotten just a little bit better.

Next time you see a work out or movement prescribed that you don’t think you can do....just show up. There’s rarely going to be a time where everybody in the gym is doing the  exact same workout as prescribed, and that’s okay.

Stay humble. Stay honest. Be smart. Keep progressing, & trust the process.
